Big Sky, bigger possibilities. Our campus is in the middle of paradise, better known
as Missoula, Montana. The only thing grander than our mountains and wild rivers is
the opportunity for our students to use their unbridled curiosity and untamed creativity
to craft their future.
Founded in 1893, the University of Montana is a top-ranked research university whose
impact is felt locally and globally. Grizzlies go on to find success abroad and at
home, known for their courageous and collective spirit unmatched on either side of the Rockies. The academic opportunities at UM abound,
ranging from undergraduate and associate degrees to professional and graduate programs,
as well as certificates.
Wherever Grizzlies Roam, They Thrive
The University of Montana is proud to have over 11,000 Grizzlies across a variety
of studies, including undergraduate and graduate programs and technical certifications,
all of whom contribute their passion and practicality toward stewardship and sustainability
for the world around us.

ACADEMICS
It all starts here
With hundreds of academic programs to select from, if you can dream it, you can do
it at the University of Montana. You don’t have to move here, either. Many programs
are available in online, fully remote formats.
Being a student at UM encompasses so much more than just the classes you take and
the degree you earn. It's also all about the community that surrounds you, the support
you receive and the places where you learn and play.
There’s no better way to kickstart a meaningful career – and life – than by learning
from those at the top of their field. From professional certificates and technical
subjects to advanced research, UM’s faculty know what they’re talking about.
Missoula holds something special for each of us. From its diverse population and rich
cultural events to a foodie’s paradise and — of course — the great outdoors, there’s something for everyone here. But don’t take our word for it — see for yourself.
Get Grizzly With It
We love every inch of Big Sky Country, but our Grizzly community — and the town of
Missoula — is where the magic happens.
If you grew up in Missoula or you've lived here for some time, you probably already
know what western Montana here has to offer. But you just might see your hometown
in a different light as a UM student.
Missoula, the Western Montana mid-sized city of about 80,000 residents that is home
to the University of Montana, tops a national list for its fun factor. According a
survey released in October 2023 by SmartAsset, Missoula is the place to be for those
aged 20 to 29 with a college degree.
Twenty actual UM students take you across campus, up mountains, down the river and
into their social circles as they showcase the adventures and experiences that have
shaped their time as a Griz.

This is Salish and Kalispel land
The University of Montana acknowledges that we are in the aboriginal territories of
the Salish and Kalispel people. We honor the path they have always shown us in caring
for this place for generations to come.

What We Love
It's pretty simple, really. We love this place. We love learning. We love rising to
a challenge (13-point underdogs, you say?). We love this Missoula community. And we
love being part of the something extraordinary every single day.
Service is Our Ethos
The University of Montana is No. 1 in the nation for its overall contribution to the
public good. UM earned the ranking based on affordability, access, social mobility
and volunteerism.
The Montana Grizzlies returned to the national stage in January 2024 to play in the
FCS National Championship game in Frisco, Texas. While the final outcome of the game
wasn't what we hoped for, we're proud of our Griz!
